Going up the beautiful valley of the river Rhône, one reaches Bagnols-sur-Cèze where we leave the Rhône and arrive at the foothills of the Cevennes. The Cevennes feature many stunningly wild landscapes in which the Ardèche-Canyon is certainly the highlight. In 1994 researchers found the oldest cave in the world, at the bottom of this amazing canyon. The prehistoric Chauvet-Cave is over 31,000 years old and approximately 420 paintings and engravings have been found. Unfortunately,
the cave is not open to public. The local authorities are, however, currently building a copy of the cave, which will be opened in a few years.
