Salzburg and its lakes: one of Austria's most beautiful cycling destinations

This tour will introduce you to the beauty of the “Salzkammergut”, once the summer residence of the Austrian imperial family. The region is also famous for being the setting of the Oscar-winning film "The Sound of Music" (1965). It is one of Austria's most charming destinations: blue lakes, imposing mountains, lush green meadows and forests create a fairytale landscape. The pristine lakes Mondsee, Attersee, Traunsee, and Wolfgangsee are the most renowned in this region.

Highlights of the tour:

  • Salzburg, cultural metropolis
  • Lake Wolfgang and the Schafberg mountain
  • The magnificent town of Gmunden
  • The lake Attersee
  • The picturesque village of Mondsee
  • The imperial summer residence, Bad Ischl

Enjoy the slope to Sankt Gilgen and end the day with a boat ride on Wolfgangsee (comfort version and deluxe version).

Overnight on near the Lake Wolfgang.

Day 3: From Lake Wolfgang to Lake Traunsee (40 km)

After a relaxing boat trip across Lake Wolfgang, cycle to the former imperial village of Bad Ischl , where you can follow in the footsteps of Emperor Franz Joseph and Empress Sisi. A stop at the famous "Zauner" pastry shop is a must. Along the Traunsee River, continue your ride to Traunkirchen or Altmünster.

Overnight stay on the shores of Lake Traunsee.

Note: Ferry from St. Wolfgang to Strobl (comfort and premium categories) or boat trip on Lake Wolfgang (standard category).

Day 4: From Lake Traunsee to Lake Attersee (40 km)

Lake Traunsee, reminiscent of a fjord, lies between Traunstein and the surrounding mountains. The ceramics town of Gmunden awaits you on today’s cycling stage. Take the time to visit the Orth Castle and do not miss the beautiful lakeside promenade before crossing the Aurachtal valley towards Lake Attersee. Literature enthusiasts may wish to make a detour to Thomas Bernhard’s house in Ohlsdorf before reaching today's destination.

Overnight near the Lake Attersee.

Day 5: From Lake Attersee to Lake Mondsee (35 km)

Ride along the clear blue shores of Lake Attersee to Unterach. After 2 km through a narrow valley, you’ll discover the legendary Lake Mondsee. Pedal along the northern shore to the picturesque town of the lake. Enjoy the many facilities available in the Salzkammergut.

Day 6: From Lake Mondsee to the Trumer Lakes Region (45 km)

Today's route peacefully takes you through Mondseeland, passing by the natural Irrsee Lake. You arrive at your destination in the afternoon. If you are a beer lover, take time to visit the Trumer brewery!

Overnight in the Trumer Lakes Region.
