The Southern Holland Route by bike on the De Amsterdam


Discover a different side of Holland on this unforgettable bicycle cruise on the De Amsterdam. This premium comfort boat will take you through the typical Dutch countryside on the southern route.

Day 1: Amsterdam


Boarding from 2 p.m. After settling in, you can explore central Amsterdam, go shopping or visit one of the city's many museums. A welcome drink awaits you in the early evening. Dinner on board then first briefing. Night on board the boat.


Day 2: From Amsterdam - Breukelen (boat) | Breukelen - Utrecht (bicycle). 20 or 39 km


Your first cycle route starts in Breukelen. You drive along the beautiful and winding Vecht River lined with towering castles and country houses. The Vecht takes you to the center of Utrecht where you can explore the beautiful historic center: St. Martin's Cathedral (Achter de Dom), canals, local shops and cozy cafes. In the afternoon you leave Utrecht to reach Rotterdam by boat.


Day 3: Rotterdam - Schiedam - Delft - Rotterdam. 48 km


Today you cross the town of Schiedam, which gave its name to a local jenever-based eau-de-vie, and via the Delfland to reach Delf, a town famous for its blue porcelain. The city center is charming with its small canals and picturesque streets, bridges and alleys. A tour of the Delftware factory will undoubtedly interest you. Return to Rotterdam which you can visit in the evening.


Day 4: Rotterdam - Alblasserdam | Kinderdijk - Gouda - Schoonhoven. 30 or 58 km


From Rotterdam to Alblasserdam, you have two choices: pedal or take the shuttle (boat) to Alblasserdam. You are a short bike ride from Kinderdijk (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and its 19 windmills. From there two possible routes:

The longest takes you to Gouda, the town that gave its name to a cheese:
The shorter one takes you through the Alblasserwaard region.
Either way you come to the “silver city” Schoonhoven where you can visit a goldsmith's shop.


Day 5: Schoonhoven to Utrecht by bike, Utrecht to Haarlem by boat. 36 à 44 km


From Schoonhoven drive through the "green heart" of Holland and through small villages and quiet roads to reach Utrecht.On the route you can visit a traditional cheese factory and / or the Witches' Weigh House in Oudewater. in the afternoon your boat sails from Utrecht to Haarlem.


Day 6: Haarlem - North Sea coast - Haarlem. 40 or 50km | Haarlem - Zaandam


Today you can choose between two routes that pass through the stunning Kennemer Dunes (National Park and Nature Reserve). After a visit to the seaside resorts of Bloemendaal and Zandvoort, you drive through the forest and then into Haarlem before joining the boat. The long version lets you admire the world's largest steam engine: the Cruquius pumping station. During dinner, the boat heads to Zaandam.


Day 7: Zaandam - Amsterdam. 32 or 53 km


From Zaandam, for your last day of cycling, the route takes you to the Zaanse Schans open-air museum (free entry) with its windmills. It is a traditional Dutch village with wooden houses, a cheese factory and a wooden clog workshop. Return to Amsterdam via the “Twiske” park. The afternoon and evening are free. Enjoy Amsterdam as you see fit.


Day 8: Amsterdam


End of the bike and boat trip after breakfast (9:30 am).

Weather :

Contrary to popular belief, the temperature in the Netherlands is similar to the temperature in France. Near the coast, the weather is sometimes windy.


Technicality :

0 to 65 km of cycling per day, or about 3 to 5 hours of cycling.

Accompaniment :

People responsible for your bike and boat holidays are : 
On board, the captain and his mate. They are responsible for the smooth running of the vacation on the boat, and bring the boat from stage to stage. The cook prepares the meals.
Each morning, if you wish, you can get benefit from advice on the route to follow and on additional tourist information.


Meals :

  • Breakfast : on board, you will find a substantial and dutch breakfast, worthy of a cyclist.
  • Lunch : after the breakfast, you will prepare by yourself a “lunch” (sandwich, fruit, snack, drinks).
  • Snack : after the daily route, you will find, when you arrive on the boat, various drinks such as tea and coffee prepared for your return, with a cake.
  • Dinner : at least three very good quality dishes. After dinner, you will have a choice of coffee and tea.

Other drinks, such as wine, beer, lemonade and mineral water, are not included but can be purchased on board at a reasonable price.


Bike :

At the beginning, on Saturday afternoon, a bike corresponding to your height, will be assigned to you. After a test ride, you will sign a receipt. The bike (21-speed bike) will be at your disposal all week until Friday afternoon, when the bike is handed over. The bike will be fitted with panniers as well as an anti-theft device, a container and a tire repair kit. There is no helmet on board.
If you take your own bike, it cannot be insured against theft by our company, you will have to make the necessary arrangements with your usual insurer. Do not forget your anti-theft. The return of your bike will be at your expense.


Transport :

  • By train : the departure towns for the bike and boat tours are served by the railway. Amsterdam train station is very well connected : several trains daily run to and from France. Thalys is faster.
  • By plane : AMSTERDAM international airport.

Your vehicle : 

We strongly advise against parking cars on the streets of Amsterdam. Information on guarded parking lots in the city can be found on the following website parkingcentrumoosterdok.nl.
