The Danube valley by bike, from Passau to Vienna

The Danube Valley is an exceptional route for cyclists. Between Passau and Vienna, you are on Eurovelo 6, a fully marked European cycle route with wide cycle paths. Take the time to admire the landscapes around this majestic river and learn about the historical and cultural heritages of Austria and Germany.

Day 1: arrival in Passau
Individual arrival in Passau. Delivery of travel log and bicycles (if reserved). Take the opportunity to discover the city, its cathedral and its castle. It is recommended to take a boat trip on the Danube (runs daily, every 30 minutes, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. for approx. €15.00 per person payable on site).
Night in Passau.
Day 2: From Passau to Schlögen or Wesenufer (40-60 km)
After enjoying the beauty of Passau, explore the fabulous Danube Valley. Just a few kilometers of country roads, you'll enjoy the cycle path that will take you on an unforgettable journey along the river, always far from any traffic, to the famous Schlögener Danube Loop. Passing Obernzell and Engelhartszell, you'll cycle along the river.
Overnight in Schlögen or Wesenufer.
Day 3: From Schlögen or Wesenufer to Linz (30-56 km)
Continue your cycle tour on the Eurovelo 6 route along old towpaths. You'll admire the villages of Aschbach and Ottensheim, the old fish markets, and their ancient houses. On both banks of the Danube, castles and monasteries are worth visiting. Your stage ends in Linz, the capital of Upper Austria.

Day 4: From Linz to Wallsee or Au (30-45 km)
The Danube Cycle Path takes you today through the Machland region. You pass by the imposing Abwinden hydroelectric power plant to reach Mauthausen. A few kilometers further, you end your stage on the banks of the Danube.
Overnight in Wallsee or Au or Perg.
Day 5: From Wallsee or Au to Pöchlarn or Maria Taferl (50-67 km)
Cycle through the heart of the Strudengau region. The route is charming and romantic on this section. Authentic villages like Grein guarantee a complete change of scenery, and the landscapes are magnificent. Maria Taferl is Austria's second most popular pilgrimage destination. Overnight in Pöchlarn or Maria Taferl.
Day 6: From Pöchlarn or Maria Taferl to Krems or Traismauer (54-67 km)
Discover a new aspect of this wonderful cycling route by crossing the vineyards of the Wachau Valley. Along the way, you'll pass through the fantastic villages of Spitz and Dürnstein before arriving in Krems, recognizable by its imposing hilltop abbey overlooking the Danube. The entire Wachau Valley is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for the quality of its landscapes. Its heritage is magnificently preserved (castles, old towns, abbeys, etc.) and the rolling landscapes are sumptuous.
Overnight in Krems or Traismauer.
Day 7: From Krems or Traismauer to Vienna (70-80 km)
Via the flower-filled town of Tulln, you'll reach Höflein. Vienna offers numerous prestigious monuments, a city steeped in history, once the cultural capital of Europe, a multifaceted city that demonstrates its proximity to Hungary. To shorten the journey, you can take the train from Tulln (approximately €11, payable on site) or from Klosterneuburg (approximately €5, payable on site).
Overnight in Vienna.
Day 8: Vienna
End of your stay in the Danube Valley after breakfast. Return transfer to Passau is optional. An additional night in Vienna is possible to fully enjoy the city and its treasures.
