Cycling route between Toulouse and Narbonne

The Canal du Midi by bike is a must for cycle tourists, listed as a Unesco World Heritage Site, it is an exceptionally rich historical and cultural heritage route between Toulouse, the medieval city of Carcassonne and Castelnaudary until Narbonne.

Points of interest of the stay:

  • Toulouse
  • The medieval city of Carcassonne
  • The Canal du Midi
  • Castelnaudary
  • Narbonne

Day 1 - Arrival in Toulouse

Check into the hotel in the city center and explore the Pink City. Toulouse owes this nickname to the use of the brick described as “fairground” in the Midi of Toulouse. Brick dresses the facades in warm colors, from the softest pink to flamboyant orange.

The essentials to discover :

- Capitol

- the St Sernin basilica

- the Jacobins convent.

Overnight in Toulouse.

Day 2 - Toulouse - Castelnaudary - 55 km

Leave Toulouse by joining the edges of the canal to reach Castelnaudary on a cycle path lined with historic plane trees. You drive along the locks and cross the threshold of Naurouze, a place where the waters divide.

Night in Castelnaudary.

Day 3 - Castelnaudary - Carcassonne - 52 km

This route takes you to the medieval city of Carcassonne. The architecture of this fortress is impressive. In summer it is very lively. On this cycle stage, you are no longer on the beautiful cycle path, the path is sometimes in poor condition.
Night in Carcassonne.

Day 4 - Visit of Carcassonne and its medieval city

Free visit of the city of Carcassonne. A true medieval jewel, Carcassonne will transport you to the Middle Ages with its two 3 km long enclosures and 52 towers. The lower town is a medieval bastide which is also worth a detour.
Night in Carcassonne.

Day 5 - From Carcassonne to La Redorte - 36 km

This stage along the Canal du Midi allows you to divide the long route between Carcassonne and Narbonne. Two aqueduct bridges were built to cross the Fresquel and the Orbiel before reaching Trèbes and its lively river port, its cafes-restaurants which border the canal and the St-Etienne church nestled in the heart of the old village. The Minervois and its famous vineyard are located near the Canal du Midi.

The banks of the Canal du Midi were impacted following the bad weather of 2018, some sections are closed but replaced by an undeveloped greenway for a rather rolling and easy stage.
Overnight in La Redorte.

Day 6 - La Redorte to Narbonne - 45 Km

The terrain is flat, but some parts of the trail are in poor condition, however, mountain biking easily overcomes these difficulties. This variant of the main route will take you to Narbonne in a short step through the junction canal to Sallèles-d'Aude. You then take the road shared by Cuxac-d'Aude to find the Canal de la Robine at the Raonel lock. Then join Narbonne by a beautiful greenway arranged and signposted.
Night in Narbonne.

Day 7 - Narbonne end of your cycling holiday

End of the tour after breakfast.
