From Porto to Lisbon along the Atlantic coast: Portugal by bike in its most beautiful facets

Portugal by bike between Porto and Lisbon is a program rich in color, sensations, and emotions. Between these two cities with their rich historical and cultural heritage, cycle mainly along the Atlantic coast. The coastline offers fine sandy beaches, lagoons, cliffs, and numerous breathtaking panoramas. Breathe in the sea air, dip your toes in the water, and more if the weather permits. Indulge in the many local specialties, take a ride on a traditional boat, and experience the warm Portuguese welcome.

Highlights of the circuit:

  • Porto
  • Lisbon
  • The colorful houses of Costa Nova
  • Cascais, a picturesque coastal village
  • The fine sandy beaches
  • The seaside resorts of Praia de Mira and Furadouro
  • Aveiro and its lagoon
  • Sintra and its castle

Day 1: Arrival in Porto

Stroll through the streets of the old town or stroll along the banks of the Douro. Stop for a drink at a terrace to taste delicious local wines in one of the city's many lively and welcoming bars. To take the time to truly explore the city, book an extra night.

Overnight in Porto

Day 2: From Porto to Furadouro or its surroundings (40-45 km)

This first cycling leg begins by crossing the Douro River. You'll reach the city's most prestigious port wine cellars. Leave the bustling city behind and head closer to the Atlantic coast and its relative calm. Fine sandy beaches and immense pine forests quickly appear as you continue south. The day's final destination is known for its welcoming locals and its fish specialties: a commodity abundant by the sea.

Overnight in Furadouro or surroundings.

Day 3: From Furadouro or its surroundings to Aveiro (40 km + ferry ride)

Today, nature has some wonderful surprises in store for you. Begin by exploring the Aveiro lagoon and, before you know it, you'll be surrounded by water. At the São Jacinto Dunes Nature Reserve, birdwatching is a must. Nearby, you can observe salt extraction at the salt pans. This stage ends by boat, as a ferry takes you to Aveiro, your overnight stop. The city is nicknamed the Portuguese Venice because of its canals and its "Moliceiro" boats, a type of colorful gondola.

Overnight in Aveiro.

Day 4: From Aveiro to Praia de Mira or surrounding areas (35 km)

Like the day before, this stage begins in the Aveiro lagoon, which will take you to Costa Nova. The seaside resort is known for its white houses with colorful stripes, which are very photogenic. Continuing south, you quickly reach your destination for the day, Praia de Mira. You have time to enjoy the long, wide, sandy beach or soak up the atmosphere in this peaceful but charming seaside resort.

Overnight in Praia de Mira or surroundings.

Day 5: From Praia de Mira or its surroundings to Figueira da Foz (50 km)

Today's route is gently hilly. You cycle through a dune landscape and gently sloping hills. You pass through a pine forest before reaching the coast, which is quite different from the previous days. Steeper, you can admire the cliffs by following the cycle path, which offers beautiful viewpoints before reaching the Cabo Mondego lighthouse. Just a few kilometres left to reach Figueira da Foz, a beautiful, lively village with, of course, a beautiful beach.

Overnight in Figueira da Fox.

Day 6: From Figueira da Foz to Sintra (transfer) and from Sintra to Cascais (35 km)

After breakfast, transfer to the royal town of Sintra. Stroll through its streets and admire the many palaces and mansions. Hop on your bike for a steep descent to the coast. After the descent, the route takes you mainly uphill to Cascais. But every effort is rewarded with panoramic views of the sea and dreamlike coves. In Cascais, the town center is authentic and has a unique style. Its promenade is also worth a visit.

Overnight in Cascais.

Day 7: From Cascais to Lisbon (40 km)

You'll cycle to Estoril along the cycle path that runs along the coast. Continue a little further to the mouth of the Tagus River. The famous Belem Tower is directly on your route. One symbolic building chases another, and you pass under the suspension bridge shortly after. Cycle along the banks of the Tagus to your hotel, located in the modern Oriente district.

Overnight in Lisbon.

Day 8: Lisbon

End of the tour after breakfast. Extend the fun in Lisbon with one or more additional nights.
