Cycling trip in Portugal, along the Atlantic Coast

This circuit is part of the Eurovelo 1 route along the Atlantic Coast. We take you to discover Portugal by bike from Porto. The coast and the beaches, the change of scenery, the warm welcome of this sunny country, like the heart of its inhabitants, seduced us.
The Atlantic Ocean, which is an intense blue, illuminated by a setting sun offers you exceptional panoramas.
Among other curiosities, you will have the pleasure of discovering Porto whose image is at the height of fame.

Day 1 : Arrival in Porto

Arrival and installation at the hotel in Porto.
Possible transfer, Porto Airport / Hotel.

Day 2: Porto- Furadouro - 45 km

Start your day with a visit to old Porto, your hotel is located in the very center, very close to São Bento train station, known for its magnificent “Azulejos”. After lunch, cross the small streets to the Dom Luis Bridge out of town. You follow the Douro for a few kilometers and then take the cycle paths and other lanes which skirt the Atlantic, heading south to arrive at Furadouro beach.

Day 3: Furadouro - Lagoa de Mira - 59 km

Today, take the roads and cycle paths to reach Torreira, then to the São Jacinto nature reserve: you will take the small “ferry” to cross the mouth of the Ria de Aveiro and arrive at the beautiful beaches of the south of Aveiro . Continue to Costa-Nova to admire its colorful fishermen's houses and continue along the Ria, then Mira Plage, and further inland, the Lagoa which borders the hotel where you will be staying.

Day 4: Lagoa de Mira - Serra da Boa Viagem - 40 km

Very beautiful course in the heart of a wild nature characteristic of this coastal region through the pines, the dunes, then an elevation of 280 m above the level of the ocean to reach the natural reserve of Serra Da Boa Viagem with magnificent views in perspective. Your hotel offers you a unique point of view over the bay of Figueira Da Foz, a wonderful place to relax at the end of the day.

Day 5 : Serra Da Boa Viagem - São Pedro De Moel - 69 km

You descend the winding roads that line the cliffs above the ocean, towards Figueira Da Foz. Then after crossing the bridge over the “Mondego”, a river mentioned by many Fados, you will follow different roads and paths that will lead you to the charming seashell-shaped bay of São Pedro de Moel.

Day 6 : São Pedro De Moel - Caldas Da Rainha - 49 km

A great cycling stage in the middle of the morning with a climb to “sitio”, but also a great reward at the finish. Indeed from this high point you overlook all Nazaré and the ocean, where one of the most famous surfing competitions takes place and where at certain times of the year you can observe its giant waves, among the most tall in the world. You will pass São Martinho do Porto, which is certainly one of the most beautiful bays on the Atlantic coast, and at the end of the day stop at Caldas da Rainha, a spa resort renowned for its sulfur waters.

Day 7: Caldas Da Rainha - Óbidos

Last day by bike towards Obidos. for the bravest, you can reach the Atlantic south of the lagoa de Obidos, before the visit to the fortified city, a course of around thirty kilometers with some good slopes, for others, the visit of Obidos, will fill certainly the agenda of the day. Pick up of bicycles at the end of the afternoon, and return by van to Quinta da Lagoa, Mira, for this last stage.

Day 8 - End of the cycling trip in Portugal

Departure from the hotel after breakfast. Possible transfer between the hotel and Porto airport.

Ground :

Flat and slightly uneven route along the coast. With some climbs in particular in Porto and on the stage of day 3.

Weather :

Temperate climate with summers regulated by the freshness of the ocean.

Technicality:

Cycling: 45 to 70 km per day or 3 to 5 hours of cycling. With possibilities to extend the routes.
Easy map reading.

Accommodation:

Independent hotels with rooms equipped with shower and toilet.

Food :

- Breakfasts: generous (coffee, tea, chocolate, milk, butter, bread, jam, orange juice)
- Lunch: picnics possible as an option.
- Dinner: meals in restaurants near the accommodation.

The bike :

- Rental bike: mountain bike or hybrid bike suspended at the front, mudguard and luggage rack, with 1 bag.
- Possible to rent electric bikes.
- If you rent a bicycle, it will be given to you on the day of your arrival at the 1st hotel.
- A security deposit will be requested.
- At the end of the tour, the return is included.
- Personal bike: We do not recommend bikes with small tires. Hybrid bikes and mountain bikes are excellent. Remember to check your bicycle before setting off.

Assistance : 

Assistance in the event of breakdown (except punctures for which we do not intervene).

Luggage :

They are transported by our team and limited to one piece of luggage per person (max. 20 kg).

Roadbook :

We will provide you with detailed maps and a description of the routes when you arrive at the first hotel. We will also give you vouchers for hotels and restaurants as well as luggage tags.

Transport :

- By road: Porto is about 1000 km from the French border. Highways to Porto.
- By plane: Porto Airport.

Your car :

A parking space is available at the first hotel.
