Sailboat and bike on Lake Ijssel and Holland’s national parks

Take a memorable trip aboard the Elizabeth sailboat and discover Holland's national parks by bicycle. Lake Ijssel is the largest lake in the Netherlands and was once part of the Zuiderzee Sea. Today it is fed by several rivers: the Amstel, the Rhine, the Vecht and the Ijssel.
You travel aboard a comfortable sailboat and cycle on beautiful cycle paths to discover picturesque villages and unique landscapes.

Highlights of the stay:

  • Picturesque port towns like Stavoren
  • Weerribben National Park
  • The experience aboard the sailboat the Elizabeth
  • Around Lake Ijssel

Day 1: Amsterdam - Monnickendam / Volendam

Your journey aboard the sailboat begins in the port of Amsterdam. You are warmly greeted by the crew at 2 p.m. When all the passengers are on board, the Elizabeth sails towards Monnickendam or Volendam, charming fishing villages. After dinner you can visit the historic city center of the city where the sailboat is moored.

Day 2: Monnickendam / Volendam (32 km or 51 km) | Volendam - Hoorn

This day begins by discovering the traditions of Holland with a visit to a cheese factory and a family clog shop. You cycle along the dikes to Purmerend, which lies in the heart of the De Beemster polder, created over 400 years ago. This polder is recognized as a masterpiece by Unesco. You then reach the town of Edam, named after the famous cheese.
Your bike tour ends in Volendam where your sailboat is located. You then sail to Hoorn where you spend the night.

Day 3: Hoorn - Enkhuizen (28 km or 39 km) | Enkhuizen - Urk

Cross hamlets and villages to reach Enkhuizen by bike. On the way, you can admire the Krijgsman windmill, the highest in North Holland. It is still used to produce flour. Enkhuizen has majestic houses, canals, and ramparts that remind us of its ancient wealth.
In the afternoon, depending on the weather, you cross the IJsselmeer to the port of Urk. You can quietly visit this picturesque village in the evening.

Day 4: Urk - Vollenhove (37 km)

Sail to "New Earth" to Schokker Haven to start your cycling tour. A beautiful paved cycle path through the polder guides you to the ancient island of Schokland. Then drive to Vollenhove, another charming fishing village where you join the sailboat.

Day 5: Vollenhove - Giethoorn (37 km or 49 km)

Departure from Vollenhove on the cycle paths to reach the town of Blokzijl. You enter the Weerribben-Wieden National Park. It is the largest freshwater wetland in northwestern Europe and a haven for flora and fauna. You may be lucky enough to spot an otter or kingfisher. Pass through Kalenberg and then continue through farmland surrounded by dykes to Giethoorn, a town known as the Venice of the North.

Day 6: Giethoorn - Lelystad

Today is the opportunity to enjoy a full day of sailing and relaxing aboard the sailboat. If you wish, you can help the captain navigate. Or you can just relax on the deck. In the early afternoon, the Elizabeth arrives in Lelystad, capital of the province of Flevoland.

Day 7: Lelystad - Blocq van Kuffeler (20 km or 29 km) | Blocq van Kuffeler - Amsterdam

In the morning you can visit the Batavia shipyard where 17th century ships are restored. Or you can go shopping at Batavia Stad.

Then go on your last bike ride of the week. You will pass through the Oostvaardersplassen nature reserve. Parts of the route meander through wooded areas, while others offer you panoramic views of vast marshes. You are in bird watchers paradise.

The sailboat awaits you in the small port of Oostvaardersdiep for the return trip to Amsterdam. Celebrate this amazing cycling and sailing trip around the IJsselmeer with a final dinner aboard the Elizabeth.

Day 8: Amsterdam

Your cycling trip ends after breakfast. Do not hesitate to extend your trip to visit the capital of the Netherlands.
