The Alpe Adria cycle path, from mountains to sea


The Alpe Adria cycle path winds through a contrasting landscape of Adriatic sea and mountains. You'll pass through the Tauern National Park, romantic villages and beautiful wine and fruit-growing regions, all the way to Grado. This exceptional cycling trip between Austria and Italy takes you on a discovery of unforgettable cultures, landscapes and culinary tastings.

Day 1: Arrival in Mallnitz


Here you are in the Hohe Tauern at Mallnitz (1,191 m altitude), surrounded by breathtaking mountain scenery.

Overnight in a 3*** hotel. Your rental bike will be available at the hotel.

 

Day 2: Spittal/Millstätter See (51 to 78 km)

 

The Alpe Adria cycle path guides you along the valley floor to Obervellach and the green Drautal. After Möllbrücke, you ride along the shores of Millstätter See to Seeboden.

If you wish, you can take the car-free Millstätter See cycle path to Sappl, at the foot of Alpe Millstätter.

Overnight at hotel 4 **** .

 

Day 3:Tarvisio (74 km)

 

This cycling stage takes you along the Drau via Paternion with magnificent views of the surrounding mountains to the Drau town of Villach. Continue along the River Gail through unspoilt countryside to the border triangle, where Austria meets Italy and Slovenia, to Arnoldstein and Tarvisio.

Overnight in a 3*** hotel.

 

Day 4: Carnia-Gemona (59 to 72 km)

 

Today, a beautiful stage on the Alpe Adria cycle path awaits you: along the Fella river through the narrow valley of the "Val Canale" canal. 

The route follows the old railroad line to Pontebba. After a short stretch of road, you drive to Venzone.

Overnight at a 3*** hotel.

 

Day 5, Udine (63 km)

 

This stage takes place partly on a section closed to cars, near the Tagliamento river or on secondary roads. You pass Osoppo and its historic fortress, and the wine village of Buia. The route continues through the fertile Friuli landscape, characterized by hills and vineyards, before reaching your destination for the day, Udine, a magnificent trading city with many sights (Piazza della Liberta, Duomo, old town).

Overnight in a 4**** - or 3*** hotel.

 

Day 6, Grado (63 km)

 

Cycle along cycle paths through romantic villages such as Pavia and Palmanova, a fortified Venetian town (16th century) with Piazza Grande, cathedral, Renaissance palaces and fully preserved ramparts.

Continue via Cervignano to Aquileia, the Roman imperial residence (UNESCO World Heritage Site). Passing through the lagoon, you can reach the small port town of Grado and its beautiful sandy beaches.

Overnight at hotel 4**** .

 

Day 7: End of Alpe Adria bike tour

Every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, round-trip by bus from near the hotel in Grado to Mallnitz (around 1:00 p.m.) with bike (transfer there and back on your own).

Climate :


The climate in Austria is continental and alpine in the mountainous regions. At high altitudes, temperatures can be cool even in summer.
Thunderstorms and showers can occur in July and August.
 
Technicality and terrain :

  • Well-developed Alpe Adria cycle path
  • flat to slightly downhill, one uphill section after the border
  • 85% of cycle path away from motorized traffic
  • 15% secondary roads, well signposted

 
Meals :

  • Breakfast: copious (coffee, tea, chocolate, milk, butter, bread, jam, orange juice)
  • Lunch: not included
  • Dinner: not included.

The bike:

  • Rental bikes: bikes equipped with front suspension, supplied with rear panniers, repair kit, padlock. VTC or VAE.
  • Personal bikes: mountain bikes are excellent. Remember to have your bike serviced before you leave. At the end of your tour, you'll need to take charge of your bike.
