Burgundy by Bike: 10 Exceptional Routes for a Turnkey Holiday

Why is Burgundy an Ideal Cycling Destination?

Burgundy is a remarkable natural destination. Located between two major urban centers, Paris and Lyon, Burgundy is distinguished by its hillside vineyards, bucolic valleys, and distinguished heritage. The landscapes are varied and allow for a complete escape.

Flat and Signposted Terrain: Greenways and Canals

Burgundy is often perceived as hilly and not necessarily accessible for cycling. This is a misconception! Thanks to a well-designed network of greenways and numerous towpaths, it is possible to cycle around Burgundy without climbing a single hill (or almost none). However, it is true that outside of the cycle routes and canals, there can be some elevation changes. Don't worry, Burgundy by e-bike is THE solution!

Heritage, vineyards, and gastronomy at every turn

This is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful French destinations for food and wine lovers. It boasts numerous Grand Cru vineyards, and there's even a dedicated "Route des Grands Crus" (Grand Cru Wine Route). As for heritage sites, how could one not mention the Hospices de Beaune, Cluny Abbey, or the Basilica of Vézelay? Beyond this heritage, you'll be captivated by the charming villages that dot the landscape at each stage, offering an experience that feels timeless.

For whom? Families, active retirees, experienced cyclists

This region is perfect for both novice and experienced cyclists. The Burgundy Canal and the Nivernais Canal are ideal for cycling on flat terrain, away from cars. These two routes are perfect for a family cycling holiday in Burgundy.

It's a practical, comfortable, and well-planned package, ideal for discovering Burgundy by bike without any hassle. All you have to do is savor the scenery, the delicious food, and the Burgundian way of life.

The Nivernais Canal by Bike: The Gentleest Green Route

Between Auxerre and Decize, 180 km of cycling routes unfold, much to the delight of all cyclists. Cycling the Nivernais Canal offers zero elevation gain, beautiful cycle paths, and magnificent stops such as Corbigny, Clamecy, Mailly-le-Château, and many more. A cycling holiday on the Nivernais Canal also allows you to enjoy the Yonne River, the Chablis vineyards, lovely natural sites, or Vézelay and its incredible basilica.

The Burgundy Canal by Bike: The Most Iconic

At 240 km, the Burgundy Canal by bike is certainly the most famous. It connects Migennes to the Saône River. At La Bicyclette Verte, we invite you to discover its most beautiful section, between Tonnerre and Dijon. Here too, following beautiful cycle paths, you'll discover magnificent treasures: medieval villages, charming locks, and vibrant vineyards.

The Grands Crus Route by bike: Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune

This route takes travelers into the most prestigious part of the Burgundy vineyards. Between Dijon and Beaune, there are no fewer than 37 picturesque wine villages and the greatest appellations such as Chambertin, Montrachet, and Clos de Vougeot. These vineyards are rooted on east-facing slopes. The Grands Crus Route by bike is a slightly more demanding itinerary than its towpath counterparts. It's a great opportunity to explore Burgundy by e-bike. Numerous tastings and vineyard visits are also possible in this part of Burgundy.

Southern Burgundy by bike: Mâconnais, Cluny, and the Green Way

Did you know? France's first greenway was created in 1997 and connects Cluny to Givry. Cycling in southern Burgundy offers diverse landscapes and allows you to travel from the prestigious vineyards of Beaune to Mâcon and the Saône Valley. Our Burgundy cycling loop starting from Beaune is an excellent route for beginners, families, and those who like to take their time and explore along the way. The cycling route starting from Dijon is also a great opportunity to follow the Grands Crus wine route before reaching Cluny, its Abbey, and the Mâconnais region.

When is the best time to cycle in Burgundy?

The best season for cycling in Burgundy runs from April to October:

  • From April to June: spring brings flower-lined locks and lush green landscapes.
  • From July to August: a lovely season to enjoy the long evenings on a terrace or to wander through the medieval streets.
  • September-October: the late season reveals vineyards in magnificent colours, the grape harvest and, with a bit of luck, a beautiful Indian summer.
How many days does it take to cycle the Burgundy Canal?

Allow 5 to 7 days to ride the 240 km between Dijon and Migennes, at a pace of 35 to 50 km per day. It is the ideal duration to fully enjoy the villages along the way and the gourmet stops in between.

Is the Nivernais Canal by bike suitable for beginners and families?

Can you cycle the Burgundy Wine Route on an electric bike?

Yes, and it is even recommended: the Wine Route includes a few climbs, particularly in the Côte de Nuits. Each of our Burgundy cycling holidays offers electric bike rental as an option.
